CHARACTER INTERPRETATION
» Appearance: Ty may not be the tallest Johnson brother, but at least he's taller than Anders and that's something to be happy about. He's about 5'9, but Ty stays in pretty good shape which gives him some extra muscle. He's not overly buff, but he's definitely toned and his arms are more defined than his brothers. Which isn't that hard in the Johnson family. Ty has dark brown hair that often can look black to some people. He's got dark grayish-blue eyes. Ty's complexion was very pale in the early seasons, but once he was able to rid himself of his God powers his complexion grew to be quite tan. Something Ty seemed quite keen on. He's also started sporting stubble lately and his hair is long enough for him to style a bit.
» Suitability: N/A.
» Orientation: Straight. Ty has only ever been seeing pursuing women. He sleeps with Helen almost immediately and in the first episode you see Ty getting dumped by a woman. He even mentions to Mike that he has a lot of female friends due to all the relationships he's been on that have ended in him being just friends with those women. He takes a specific interest in Dawn (who is a woman) and even falls in love with her. He marries a woman (in an attempt to free his brother from a marriage he doesn't want), but that goes south when his mother kills her. Throughout the entire three seasons Ty really only seems to be interested in women despite Anders telling countless of women that Ty is gay.
» Personality: Ty's got three very different personalities that show throughout the three seasons. The first season starts Ty off as a sort of pessimistic shy guy. He's not incredibly happy with his life and he seems to be a natural loner.
The first thing you should know about Ty is that he absolutely hates being a God. Ty's brothers all got abilities that were helpful and weren't always active, but Ty's powers have kept him from establishing any sort of intimate relationship with a woman. Ty's ability allows him to turn things slightly colder. This includes any room he's in and a drink in his hand. Unfortunately because of his ability Ty can't really taste food or drink properly. It all sort of turns to cold ash in his mouth. Something that he resents. Being around women becomes hard for him because Ty loses control of his abilities when he experiences moments of extreme emotion. Something that's seen when he falls asleep with Dawn (whom he loves very deeply) and nearly freezes her to death in her sleep. This event sets Ty on a rather dark path eventually.
Early on in the series it's established that Ty is a hopeless romantic. He believes that he'll find a woman to love him back despite his countless number of failed relationships. Ty is often too nice and perhaps too quick to fall in love with a woman. This becomes a problem when he's dumped and actually stays pretty good friends with the women. He even gets calls from them with questions about their current romantic endeavors. Ty is always there to offer advice and listen to their problems. He has never really distanced himself from a woman with the exception of Dawn, but he did that under the assumption it would be for her own good after her near death experience.
He kind of hates his life in season one. He isn't as dark as season two though. He just kind of always expects things to go wrong. For the brief time he is with Dawn it's easy to see that Ty is happy. The happiness is lost when he has to break up with her after she almost dies. Ty has a long string of bad luck with women before Dawn though. He meets a fellow Goddess that makes him feel warm and happy (something he's not experienced since his powers kicked on). Unfortunately she is destined to constantly fall for his older brother Anders and Ty gives her up before that can happen. Not willing to deal with that pain, but also not wanting her to get hurt by his brother who is a natural womanizer.
Ty's outlook on everything changes and gets darker when he has to give up Dawn. Ty begins to resent everything that has to do with Gods. Even more than usual. He also has to enter into a loveless marriage with another Goddess to stop her father from killing Mike when Axl backs out of the marriage contract when season two stars. This shows that Ty is willing to do just about anything for his family even if it means sacrificing his own happiness. Ty loves fiercely. He'll sacrifice life and limb to keep those around him safe. When his father (God of the Sea) would return from his voyages he would come home to demand sex from his mother. He would often fly into a rage and hit his mother as well. Ty was always the one that wanted to confront the man and fight him despite standing no chance. He always wanted to protect their mother and it was often her who had to talk Ty down from getting himself hurt. Ty is also the one to physically run up to the top of the parking garage when Axl is threatening suicide by jumping. Ty goes up to talk to Axl and coax him off the ledge. Ty's compassion can often be fierce, but it's also something that sets him apart from his brothers.
Unfortunately by marrying Eva (the Goddess Hel) he begins a downward spiral into something dark and broken. You begin to see the life drain from Ty slowly. He develops bags and dark circles around his eyes. Ty even starts to get more pale than usual. Just one glimpse at him and Eva's destructive relationship tells you everything you need to know about Ty in those times. He's losing himself. He's losing the pieces of him that make him compassionate and kind. He's losing his relationship with his brothers. He no longer seems to care about things. His grandfather thinks that Ty is resigned to his fate. That Ty has accepted this cold and dark loneliness.
Eva being the Goddess of Death and with Ty being the God of "all things dark and cold" combining the two of them is bad. Eva pulls Ty away from his family slowly. He starts to get angry with them and resentful. When Mike yells at him for abusing his ability Ty snaps back about how Mike uses his power (of never losing at games) to make money for him. He seems to turn his back on them there. At one point he's supposed to meet Axl and their mother for dinner, but he abandons that to stay home with Eva. Ty begins to value Eva and the pain she gives him more than his family. Eva starts to get him to use his powers for something incredibly wrong. Together they seduce someone (male or female) and then while making out Ty will start to freeze them. He stops though when they're on the brink of death. They claim it's a rush. When confronted he doesn't even see what he's doing is wrong. At this point everything in Ty's life tastes like cold ash even more than usual and the only thing that makes him feel is the pain that Eva brings. He explains that when him and Eva make love it's a cold that makes him feel like he's being reamed with rusty barbwire, but it's something. Which is all that Ty thinks he has to look forward to. Ty stops valuing his own life and lets himself sink further into Eva and her destructive path.
When his brothers actually try to talk to Ty he acts hostile to them. This shows just how far Ty has fallen into this hole of darkness created by his and Eva's marriage. They fight violently with each other sometimes. Ty honestly doesn't love Eva and it seems that Eva only loves the chaos she can get with Ty. They use each other for pleasure and pain but there doesn't appear to be any real affection between the two of them. Neither of them care when the other is hurt, physically or emotionally and while they might have branded eacj other in some twisted attempt to show loyalty, it's just another example of how they push each other down a dark path.
He decides to divorce Eva completely once she tries to kill Dawn. Showing that despite his marriage to Eva there's no actual love there for Ty. He truly still loves and cares for Dawn. Something you see in one of the earlier episodes when Dawn sends him a housewarming gift and he obsesses about it all night. When Eva breaks it he flies into a fit of rage.
Even though he has rage fits when with Eva it's still easy to see that Ty is not a man that really goes for confrontation often. The only person he ever really seems to fight with is Anders and that's just bickering when Anders mocks Ty's powers. Ty is usually pretty tame only really flying off the handle if necessary. It seems his trigger points are Dawn, his father and Anders being a dick.
Despite Ty's ability being a problem he still found a way to use it. Ty got into ice sculpting and can often be found carving ice angels in a refrigerator room while wearing a wife beater. Ty often uses this hobby and running long distances as a way of calming himself down and clearing his mind. It also seems to be a way of isolating himself.
Ty may not have loved Eva like Dawn, but he's still visibly upset when he learns that his mother murdered Eva in some foolish misguided attempt to protect her son. He's outraged with her and angry. Although he agrees to cover up the murder as an accidental death the guilt and threats from Eva's father become too much for Ty. Ty ultimately goes to Eva's father (Loki) and tells him the truth. This shows that Ty's compassion really knows no end. Eva has constantly been a thorn for him and a source of immense pain, but he still cares for her. She tried to kill Dawn, but he still sheds tears at her death.
He's incredibly resourceful though. He's able to handle anything that comes his way. Ty loses his God powers and becomes mortal in a desperate attempt to be with Dawn completely and stop her from leaving town by season three. Unfortunately he isn't told that when he becomes mortal every mortal that ever knew Ty suddenly forgets him and what he meant to them. Meaning that when he went to Dawn to be with her she didn't recognize him at all. Ty is devastated by this, but he doesn't let it keep him down. Ty decides to devote his time to making Dawn fall back in love with him even if she thinks that he's incredibly weird and kind of creepy. Ty is also rejected and pushed away from family business by his older brother Mike because Mike intended to have Ty use his powers to kill Loki. Without his brothers abilities it meant Loki could continue living and Mike wouldn't get his vengeance on the man. Despite Mike doing that Ty still claims to be the happiest he's ever been in a long time. His complexion becomes tanner and he seems to open up socially. He still lacks certain conversational skills with women, but he tries.
Just recently Ty realized that he could no longer do his job as a fridge repairman due to his powers being gone. He was no longer as effective. He gave up his job and was in the process of selling his apartment to start his life over. Unfortunately Loki burned his house to the ground which forced Ty to go live with his little brother for a bit until he got back on his feet. Ty got a job as a bicycle courier which he's come to absolutely love. He's seen riding face and actually smiling. Eventually though he realizes that Dawn is dating one of his coworkers and despite it being painful for Ty he still tries to maintain a friendship with her and is genuinely pleasant with the coworker. It almost seems as if Ty has given Dawn up and is trying to move on with his life at this point.
Despite all these bad things happening and just stacking up for Ty he seems to be pretty happy and optimistic about his life. You begin to learn that even without Dawn in his life or Mike being forever angry with him Ty is much happier as a mortal. He gets a chance to live his life. He can taste food. He can feel the sun. He can be intimate with someone. It's the happiest Ty is. He's even given a chance to resolve the anger he feels towards his father when they have a Johnson Family Reunion BBQ. Ty is seen at the end of that episode smiling and having a good time with his family playing backyard cricket.
The most important aspect of Ty's life is his relationship with his brothers. Their father being the God of the Sea was often gone. Eventually he just stopped coming back entirely. Ty's mother left the family to become a tree when Mike (his older brother) turned 21. She lead him through his ceremony and then told him to do it for his younger brothers. For as long as Ty can remember Mike has always been like a father to him and the others. Mike is the moral compass for Ty. He often seeks counsel from his brother. Anders is technically the next oldest, but he has the emotional capacity of a sixteen year old boy. Ty is third oldest and then Axl is the youngest. Despite the fact that his brothers can often piss him off and make fun of him that doesn't mean Ty would ever abandon them. He always seems to be there if they need him. He's very giving and family oriented.

[ The device comes on to reveal Ty, but the backdrop is no longer the palace bedroom he woke up in on his first day. It's not even the hostels thankfully. It's Anders' loft and he looks more than amused. Something satisfying about strong arming Anders into giving him a place to stay. If Mike was here he'd probably be proud of him. ]
Ty here. I've been holding off on finding employment. Not because I don't want a job, but mostly because it riles Anders up. If it were up to him I woulda got a job the first day I arrived. Either I think it's about time now. I used to fix fridges back home, but just recently I started work as a bicycle courier. Not really sure if you all have those here. Probably not.
[ The view shifts as Ty gets up from the couch and makes his way towards Anders' kitchen. He finally flips the device back on himself as he walks. ]
If you know of any job openings I'm happy to learn. I'm always eager to work. I show up on time and I work hard. I'll take just about anything at this point. Anything to make Anders stop asking. Call if you've got something yeah? [ He smiles. ] Ta.

When Ty opens his eyes he finds that he's not in his bed. He's somewhere else. Somewhere that is not the tiny one bedroom apartment he went to bed in the night before. Ty scrambles to his feet and the moment his feet touch the ground is the moment he realizes he's in fact very naked. Not a huge problem if he was with someone, but waking up on his own like that is different. His first thought is that this is Anders playing some sort of stupid prank. This seems childish enough for him to do, but Ty is a weird feeling in the pit of his stomach. One that he gets after sex. A satisfied feeling. Probably not something his older brother is responsible for. If it is then they have to have a meeting pronto.
His hands go up to his neck at the weird chaffing feeling on his neck. His fingers wrap around a leather collar and he gives it a pull. This definitely seems like something stupid Anders would do. This is looking more and more like a childish Anders prank. Stripping Ty naked and dropping him in a strange foreign bed with a collar around his neck? Definitely the work of his older brother. He's probably sitting back at his apartment having himself a laugh about this. Stupid wanker. Such a twat. Why would anyone think this was funny to do to another human being? He's gonna have to call Mike who'll no doubt be furious about the whole thing. It'll wind him up and then he'll go wind Anders up.
Finally Ty pulls on his pants and reaches out for the device next to the bed. It's not his mobile. He knows that almost immediately. A few moments of scrolling through pretty much confirms that. He pockets it though and goes for the basket on the dress across the room. The basket has food which isn't an Anders thing to do. He doesn't even have food in his fridge. Why would he leave Ty with food? He's not even sure that Anders knows where a grocery store is. The condoms though--that's the work of his stupid brother. Though the joke is lost on Ty. Probably something Dawn related and the fact that she was sleeping with someone else.
What a twat.
